Portrait of Hema Devi, Chikankari artisan at Shwet Heritage, Lucknow
Hema Devi

Hema Devi is an older artisan from Chowk, Lucknow, who first learned Chikankari from her mother-in-law in her early married years.

Shwet Heritage SHG network, Lucknow

The stitches

  • Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
  • Chana Patti (gram leaf)Gram-leaf trios scattered along creepers, small leaves in threes.
  • Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
  • Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.

Allied Lucknow work

Worked alongside the Chikankari, not part of it.

  • Mukaish (metal sparkle)Flattened metal wire pierced through the cloth and twisted into points of sparkle, Lucknow’s badla work.

How to wear it

  • Pearl drops and clear block heels keep eyes on the embroidery.
  • Drape the dupatta over both shoulders with cream juttis.
