Shab Black and Beige Chanderi Saree
95 ends and 62 picks to the inch make this Chanderi, semi sheer and black, the night Shab is named for. Beige is the only thread colour, and bakhiya, worked from behind, surfaces lighter than the ground while chana patti, keel kangan, pechni and phanda sit on the face at full beige. Meera hand embroidered it in Lucknow, a 5.5 metre drape and 80 cm for the blouse.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Chana Patti (gram leaf)Gram-leaf trios scattered along creepers, small leaves in threes.
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- Beige is a warm thread, not a white one, so gold and antique brass sit inside its range. Oxidised silver picks up only the black.
- Chanderi keeps a low sheen of its own, so a sequinned or tissue blouse sets a second light against it where a matte cloth leaves the shine to the saree.
- Five stitches is more than any other Chanderi in the catalogue carries, and a sangeet or a wedding reception is where that count is worth wearing.
