Chandni White Chanderi Saree
Chandni is moonlight, the light that drains colour and leaves a shape to be read by its shadows. White thread on white Chanderi sets a hand the same problem: Malti hand embroidered bakhiya from the reverse of the semi sheer cloth in Lucknow so the motif surfaces as shadow, then knotted phanda and wrapped pechni, the raised work a fingertip finds. 5.5 metres, blouse piece included at 80 cm.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- Have the 80 cm blouse piece stitched in the same white to keep the drape unbroken, or in gold tissue to give the motifs a ground.
- Pearl studs and a thin gold chain for a festive morning, when side light does most of the work on the knots.
- For a wedding, a deep maroon or bottle green blouse sets the white off across the pallu.
