Tepchi outlines a petal and leaves it unfilled, so the French blue Kota check shows inside the white flowers. The maker hand embroidered this cotton and silk in Lucknow, phanda knots at the flower centres and keel kangan ringing the widest, 5.5 metres with no blouse piece. Barkha is rain, and where the cloth doubles, the flowers underneath blur through like drops behind a window.

The stitches

  • Tepchi (running)The swift running stitch laid along the printed motif, the ground on which every other stitch is built.
  • Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
  • Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.

How to wear it

  • The order holds the saree and no blouse cloth, so see the tailor first. A white blouse, as photographed, takes up the thread, a deeper blue the ground.
  • Your blouse reads through this pallu across the chest, and its neckline and any mirror work become part of the saree.
  • White on French blue reads sober at a desk on a Monday, and with jasmine in the hair it goes on to a puja at home.
