Shafaq Blue and Pink Kota Saree
Shalendri hand embroidered one stitch in Lucknow and worked nothing over it, so tepchi, normally the groundwork under a Chikankari drawing, is the whole embroidery, pink thread on a blue ground. Cotton makes up 77.4% of this Kota doria saree, silk 15.6% and lyocell 7%. Shafaq is the pink the sky turns at dusk, 5.5 metres in a single piece, blouse not included.

The stitches
- Tepchi (running)The swift running stitch laid along the printed motif, the ground on which every other stitch is built.
How to wear it
- Pink and blue are the only two colours here, so the blouse leads with one of them. Pink takes up the thread, blue lets the ground run on unbroken.
- Tepchi is a flat running stitch and the only one worked here, so nothing in the embroidery is raised the way a knot or a wrapped cord would be.
- Shafaq names an hour, not an occasion. Pink on blue belongs to a morning as much as to a festival, so the name is no reason to save the saree.
