Gulaal Pink and Purple Kota Saree
5.5 metres of pink Kota doria carry one purple thread, and it runs so near the ground that the flowers arrive as a change of tone rather than of colour. Shailendri hand embroidered them in Lucknow, tepchi drawing the stems and petal edges, keel setting a point at each centre. Gulaal is the Holi powder that runs pink into purple, no blouse piece, 80–85 GSM and 100% cotton.

The stitches
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Tepchi (running)The swift running stitch laid along the printed motif, the ground on which every other stitch is built.
How to wear it
- A blouse has to be made for this saree, and a strong colour can enter there, because the drape keeps its pink and its purple in one range.
- The embroidery gathers into a denser band at the pallu and along the border, so carry the pallu long enough for that band to fall past the shoulder.
- Gulaal is a Holi word, and dry colour does not leave cotton easily, so this saree belongs to the lunch after the playing rather than to the playing.
