Nothing on this light green saree is embroidered in green. Sea blue does the drawing instead, Pushpa marking out each motif in tepchi, then knotting the buds in phanda, the only texture in the embroidery. Kairi, the raw mango, is hand embroidered in Lucknow on a 5.5 metre Kota doria in 100% cotton, 78 ends by 66 picks to the inch, no blouse piece.

The stitches

Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
Tepchi (running)The swift running stitch laid along the printed motif, the ground on which every other stitch is built.

How to wear it

A check is woven into Kota doria itself, so anything checked or striped worn with this saree sets a second pattern against the cloth's own.
The border ends in crochet, a worked edge the blouse has no reason to repeat, so plain hems and a plain neckline keep it the only one.
