Chiffon has no body of its own, so this saree takes the wearer's line rather than holding one, pleats falling narrow, pallu lying close. Rinki hand embroidered three stitches in green on the golden yellow in Lucknow, bakhiya shading each bud from the reverse, phanda knotted, pechni wound into a raised cord. Surajmukhi means sunflower, the ground's yellow, and the 5.5 metres come with an 80 cm blouse piece.

Rinki is a young Chikankari artisan from BKT, Lucknow, who began stitching when her husband’s income could no longer cover their daughter’s school fees.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
How to wear it
- The 80 cm blouse piece is unstitched, so your tailor cuts the blouse, and a green one would repeat the thread where the photographed ivory blouse does not.
- The body carries only scattered buds and the work gathers on the pallu and the borders, so pin the pallu open at the shoulder where the jaal shows.
- Chiffon slips against itself, so a pin at the waist keeps the pleats where they were set and a second at the shoulder keeps the pallu open.
