Koyal Black Kota Saree
Only one ground in the house's Kota doria is black, and this saree is the one, on cloth weighing 80–85 grams a square metre. White thread carries two stitches, and Meena hand embroidered both in Lucknow, tepchi laying the drawing down flat, phanda raising a knot at each bud. Koyal is the black cuckoo, and the 5.5 metre drape is 100% cotton with no blouse cloth.

The stitches
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
- Tepchi (running)The swift running stitch laid along the printed motif, the ground on which every other stitch is built.
How to wear it
- A koyal calls through the Awadh summer. Black takes the sun, and cotton woven this open at 80–85 GSM is what makes it wearable in that heat.
- Black agrees with whatever the sandals and the bag already are, so an office morning asks for no decision beyond the drape itself.
