Neelam Cyan Kota Saree
The check on Neelam is the Kota loom's work and not the needle's, 78 ends in the inch, 66 picks across. Cyan blue is that name's sapphire, the only cyan ground among the house's Kota doria. Rajiya hand embroidered it white in Lucknow, tepchi tracing the printed line, keel set inside its kangan ring, phanda knotted bud by bud, 100% cotton over 5.5 metres, no blouse cloth.

Rajiya comes from a family where Chikankari has been practiced for generations, and she grew up watching her mother and grandmother stitch in the courtyard.

The stitches
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
- Tepchi (running)The swift running stitch laid along the printed motif, the ground on which every other stitch is built.
How to wear it
- Nothing arrives for the blouse, so the shoulder is yours to set. Choose white and the embroidery leads the drape, choose cyan and the ground does.
- The same check that patterns the cloth gives the pleats a line to follow, so they can be judged against the weave rather than by eye.
