Nanhi Baby Pink Kota Saree
White thread works three ways against this baby pink ground: tepchi lays the line, keel kangan points each flower centre and rings it, phanda ties the knots. Phanda is Babita's specialty, and in Lucknow she hand embroidered all three onto a Kota doria whose grid is 78 ends against 66 picks in the inch. Nanhi is the baby in baby pink, 5.5 metres, 100% cotton, no blouse piece.

The stitches
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
- Tepchi (running)The swift running stitch laid along the printed motif, the ground on which every other stitch is built.
How to wear it
- What ships is the drape alone, with nothing for the blouse. A white blouse follows the thread onto the shoulder, a baby pink one carries the ground instead.
- Phanda knots stand above the weave, so give the saree a fresh fold line each time it goes into the muslin bag rather than creasing the same one across them.
