Chhaya Yellow and Black Mulmul Saree
Shadow is what Chhaya means, and one black thread carries all the embroidery on this saree. Worked as bakhiya on the reverse, the same thread reads back through the yellow mulmul as a shadow, and wrapped as pechni it stands off the face in a cord. Sufiya hand embroidered the drape in Lucknow, 100% cotton at 70–75 grams to the square metre, 5.5 metres, no blouse piece.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
How to wear it
- Black is the only thread colour here, so a blouse cut in that black repeats the drawing while a yellow one leaves the thread as the only dark line.
- Tassels are the only trim on this saree, so leave them loose and let them swing rather than pinning them down.
- Pechni wraps the black thread into a raised cord, so a bag carried in the hand serves the drape better than a strap across the shoulder.
