Chukandar Magenta and Red Mulmul Saree

Mulmul moves a beat behind the wearer and takes its time settling, 70–75 grams to the square metre of 100% cotton. Shailendri hand embroidered the saree in Lucknow, red in every stitch, bakhiya laid on the back, pechni wrapping red over red, phanda tying knots that sit proud of the magenta. Chukandar is the beetroot, magenta right through, and the drape runs 5.5 metres without a blouse piece.

Aarti Kashyap is a fine embroiderer in the Shwet Heritage self-help-group network in Lucknow, at the frame since 2021 with tepchi and bakhiya as her stitches. Fine work is where every new hand in the network is proven, and her profile appears here exactly as she is credited in our workshop records.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- Red sits one step from magenta, so the drawing is a shift of shade, and the saree is for a family function rather than the far end of a hall.
- No blouse cloth comes with the saree. Choose it beside the drape in daylight, where a magenta and a red this close are hardest to tell apart.
- Mulmul at this weight folds down small, and a saree that travels to a festival in another city arrives wanting nothing but an iron.
