Sindoor Red Mulmul Saree
Five stitches, a number no other mulmul saree in the catalogue reaches, and Meera hand embroidered all five in Lucknow. White thread on the vermilion red of sindoor: bakhiya worked on the reverse, phanda knotted one at a time, chana patti in leaves of three, keel kangan ringing each centre, and pechni raising a cord off the ground. Sindoor runs 5.5 metres, 100% cotton, 70–75 GSM, no blouse piece.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Chana Patti (gram leaf)Gram-leaf trios scattered along creepers, small leaves in threes.
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- No blouse piece comes with this saree, so allow for a tailor. A blouse in the same red leaves the white thread as the only drawing on the drape.
- White on red is the whole drawing, so anything printed alongside it competes. Flat cloth and small metal let the embroidery stay the pattern.
- Mulmul at 70–75 grams to the square metre is featherweight, so the saree wears the same through a Diwali evening and a working morning.
