Chaman White Multicolour Mulmul Saree
Chaman is a garden, and the garden is in the thread, not the cloth: red, blue, green and yellow on white mulmul. In Lucknow, Sulekha hand embroidered the leaves in threes with chana patti, tied the buds one knot at a time with phanda, and wrapped the stems into a raised spiral with pechni. 5.5 metres of mulmul, 100% cotton, 70–75 grams per square metre, and no blouse piece.

Sulekha lives in Lucknow and first picked up Chikankari when her family was going through a tight financial phase and every extra bit of income mattered.

The stitches
- Chana Patti (gram leaf)Gram-leaf trios scattered along creepers, small leaves in threes.
- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- Red, blue, green and yellow all run in the thread, so the blouse can pick up any one of the four. A white blouse leaves all four to the drape.
- The drawing already carries four colours, so let the blouse be one flat colour rather than a print or a brocade.
- Pin the pleats where the cloth is bare, not through a phanda knot or a pechni cord, since both sit above the surface.
