Aabroo Peach Mulmul Saree
Savitri hand embroidered this peach mulmul from both faces in Lucknow, phanda knotting the white thread onto the front, bakhiya laying the same thread on the reverse, where she judged the stitch by the shadow it threw forward. Aabroo, honour in Urdu, is 100% cotton weighing 70–75 grams to the square metre, a single drape of 5.5 metres with no blouse piece.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- Wear the knotted face outward, since bakhiya is worked behind it and comes through the mulmul instead of sitting on top of it.
- Pleat this saree over a starched petticoat. Mulmul this light takes its line from what is under it rather than holding one itself.
- Mulmul is cotton and hand washes at home, which is what puts hand embroidery into a working week rather than keeping it for occasions.
