Jamun Purple Mulmul Saree
Rukaiya Begum worked four stitches on this purple mulmul in one white thread, so she set them at different heights. Bakhiya on the reverse shows through as a shadow, chana patti leaves and phanda knots on the cloth, pechni above them in a cord. Jamun is the Indian blackberry, and the mulmul, 70–75 GSM in 100% cotton, runs 5.5 metres, hand embroidered in Lucknow, with no blouse piece.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Chana Patti (gram leaf)Gram-leaf trios scattered along creepers, small leaves in threes.
- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- Draw the pallu over the shoulder and pechni meets the fingers first, a cord above the leaves and the knots, so the hand reads this drape before the eye does.
- Only the drape is in the parcel, so the blouse is a separate visit to the tailor. Keep its cloth light, or the shoulder carries more than the saree does.
- The care here is a hand wash and not a dry clean, so this is hand embroidery an ordinary day can afford, not only a festival.
