36 kali panels are cut into this purple mulmul, and the four stitches the maker hand embroidered on it in Lucknow share one white thread. Bakhiya, sewn from the reverse, surfaces each petal as a lilac shadow, ghas patti fans the leaves, keel points and kangan rings set the centres, phanda knots dot the skirt. Banafsha names the violet flower, 70–75 GSM, the button placket running down into the flare.

Rinki is a young Chikankari artisan from BKT, Lucknow, who began stitching when her husband’s income could no longer cover their daughter’s school fees.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
- Ghas Patti (grass leaf)Blades of grass worked in mirrored V-strokes, leaf-work that fans across hems and vines.
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
How to wear it
- The yoke and sleeves carry the dense work and the skirt only single knots, so a dupatta would hide the most embroidered part, and the kurta goes without one.
- The embroidery is white on every panel, so a white churidar or white pants below it match it and purple stays the one colour.
- The kurta carries two colours, purple and white, so jewellery is the third: silver keeps it cool and gold warms it.

Each piece is embroidered and finished by hand, so a measurement may vary by up to 1 inch. That variation is the signature of handwork, not a defect. The hip figure is taken across the 36 kali flare, laid flat and doubled, which is why it runs far wider than a straight kurta.
