Bakain is the Persian lilac, the chinaberry whose flowers line Lucknow lanes in April, and the cloth here is that lilac, its thread white. The maker hand embroidered the white in Lucknow, densest at the yoke and sleeves, bakhiya behind the cloth so it arrives as shadow, ghas patti leaves down the vines, phanda knotting the centres. Calf length, buttoned neck to hem, 36 kali panels in 70–75 GSM mulmul.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
- Ghas Patti (grass leaf)Blades of grass worked in mirrored V-strokes, leaf-work that fans across hems and vines.
How to wear it
- With the lower buttons undone the front parts at every step and shows the pants beneath, and done up to the hem it is closed.
- A pocket opens at the hip under the flare, so whatever goes in it sits inside the skirt's width and shows nowhere.
- Bakain flowers in April, and 70–75 GSM mulmul is the weight for the heat that month brings.

Each piece is embroidered and finished by hand, so a measurement may vary by up to 1 inch. That variation is the signature of handwork, not a defect. The hip figure is taken across the 36 kali flare, laid flat and doubled, which is why it runs far wider than a straight kurta.
