Roli Yellow and Maroon Kota Saree
Tepchi runs maroon and yellow, the only stitch here the maroon reaches, while phanda is tied knot by knot and keel sets each pointed centre, both in the ground's yellow, raised under the hand. Pushpa hand embroidered all three in Lucknow, 5.5 metres of Kota doria, 77.4% cotton at 100–112 grams to the square metre, no blouse piece. Roli is that red, turmeric turned by slaked lime into tilak powder.

The stitches
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
- Tepchi (running)The swift running stitch laid along the printed motif, the ground on which every other stitch is built.
How to wear it
- The blouse is yours to have cut. Maroon promotes a colour that only the tepchi carries, while the ground's own yellow leaves the outline as the only drawing.
- Kota doria is an open weave, so the petticoat under it changes the yellow you see. A matching yellow keeps the ground even, a deeper one quiets it.
- Leaf and vine work runs through the pallu and the body carries scattered butis, so let the pallu fall open at the shoulder rather than pleat it into a band.
