Amrai Yellow and Peach Kota Saree
Every knot on this saree is peach, and a thumb counts them one by one. Madhu hand embroidered both stitches in Lucknow, the phanda in peach alone, the bakhiya worked from the reverse in peach and the ground's own yellow together. Amrai is the mango grove, yellow and peach in one ripening fruit, Kota doria at 5.5 metres, cotton with 15.6% silk and 7% lyocell, no blouse piece.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- Peach runs through both stitches and yellow through only one, so a peach blouse repeats more of the thread and a yellow one keeps the ground unbroken.
- One piece, 5.5 metres, is all that arrives, so carry the drape to the tailor and match the blouse against the cloth rather than against a colour name.
- Two stitches and one ground colour keep the saree spare, so it belongs to a festival day and to an ordinary working one equally.
