Patang Blue and Yellow Kota Saree
Phanda ties one yellow knot at the centre of every blue flower on the body. Keel answers in blue on the same blue ground, and bakhiya carries both colours into herringbone bands across the pallu and border. Patang is the kite, and the Kota doria, an open check, runs 5.5 metres, cotton at 77.4% and silk at 15.6%, every band and knot hand embroidered by Savitri in Lucknow.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- You will need blouse cloth of your own. Take its colour from the pallu, where the yellow work is widest, rather than from the quieter body.
- Wide yellow work stays inside the bands and single knots are all the yellow the body holds, so the saree carries a festival and the ordinary week after it.
