Kiran White Chanderi Stole
Hathkati draws threads out of this white Chanderi and re-binds them by hand into open bands that need no contrast at all. Reeta hand embroidered the 190 cm stole in Lucknow: bakhiya shadows from the reverse and keel kangan points and rings each flower centre, both in white thread and both read by light alone. 82.6% cotton and 17.4% silk, and raking light is the ray Kiran names.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Hathkati (open drawn work)Threads drawn out and re-bound entirely by hand into airy open bands of drawn-thread work.
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
How to wear it
- Choose the kurta first and let the stole follow, since white work adds no colour to an outfit and will sit over marigold as readily as over black.
- Keep the kurta under it plain rather than printed, since a busy ground shows through the drawn thread bands and closes the openings up.
- 190 cm loops once at the neck with both ends still hanging, which lets the Chanderi fall instead of bunching at the throat.
