Kiran Gulabi Pink Chanderi Stole
Suman Kumari worked one stitch into this Chanderi stole and the other onto it, thread and ground both recorded pink. Bakhiya goes in from behind the semi sheer weave, darkening a motif through the cloth, and phanda ties the flower centres into knots on the face. Hand embroidered in Lucknow, 190 cm, 82.6% cotton with 17.4% silk, the pink Gulabi names.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- Semi sheer cloth lets the layer under it through, so this pink deepens over a dark kurta and stays pale over an ivory one.
- Silk is 17.4% of this cloth and cotton the rest, which puts the sheen low and the hand closer to a fine cotton than to a silk.
- Bakhiya lies on the reverse, so a stole that turns in wear shows the thread itself on one face and the same thread through the weave on the other.
