Bakhiya crosses its white thread on the back of the cloth, and this pale lime organza shows each crossing from the front, a herringbone inside every flower petal. Pudina is mint, whose leaves grow in pairs, and the sprays the maker hand embroidered in Lucknow down both long edges pair theirs too. The polyester organza, 2.5 metres by 95 cm, lies crisp over the wrist and holds a fold.

The stitches

  • Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.

How to wear it

  • Over a white kurta the cloth pales almost to lemon and the doubled fold at the shoulder deepens towards olive, so the strongest green sits at the face.
  • At a haldi morning, wear it over a plain yellow kurta. The white flowers show more over yellow than over white.
  • One dupatta is what ships, without the white kurta or the pants with a rust red hem band, and any work on your own kurta will read through the organza.
