A kurta already in the cupboard goes to a winter wedding under Kohra, which means fog, and its colour comes through a shade paler. The leaves are the maker's, hand embroidered in Lucknow, white on white in bakhiya shadow work, and in a fold, a lower leaf shows faintly through the upper. Polyester organza stands away from the shoulder instead of lying on it, 2.5 metres long, 95 cm wide.

The stitches

  • Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.

How to wear it

  • The rust orange kurta and white pants stay with the shoot. The parcel holds the dupatta, and what goes under it comes from your own cupboard.
  • Over rust orange, one layer softens to coral and the open front stays full orange. Let it fall wide for orange, close it for coral.
  • At a winter wedding a red, bottle green or mustard kurta sets the colour of the outfit, since white thread on a white ground adds no second one.
