White on white organza shows the colour of any kurta under it, as dew shows the green of its leaf, and Shabnam is dew. The maker hand embroidered a lattice in Lucknow, bakhiya shadow work in diagonal rows with a phanda knot set in each motif. The polyester cloth runs 2.5 metres by 95 cm, sheer enough to show the bangles at a wrist.

The stitches

  • Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
  • Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.

How to wear it

  • Take it to a mehndi or a sangeet over a kurta in a strong colour, since white thread reads by what sits behind it and goes quiet over white.
  • A single layer over a rust orange kurta reads salmon pink and a doubled fold reads nearly white, so how you fold it across the chest sets the colour.
  • The rust orange kurta and white pants in the photographs are styling. The order is the one dupatta, and the kurta under it is yours to choose.
