A hand behind one layer of this organza shows every finger, and the cloth reads coral there and red wherever it folds double. Named for safflower, the old red dye, Kusum is a polyester dupatta, 2.5 metres long and 95 cm wide. The maker hand embroidered it in Lucknow with white thread, bakhiya shadow work in the flower petals and a border of fern sprays along the edge.

The stitches

  • Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.

How to wear it

  • Over a white kurta a single layer goes rose and every fold stays red. The kurta and the pants in the photographs are styling, not in the order.
  • Sheer means the kurta underneath shows through, so a plain one leaves the white flowers clear and a worked one lays its own pattern behind them.
  • At a sangeet or a daytime wedding, worn over one shoulder, 2.5 metres lets the long end reach the floor. Gather it over an arm to cross the room.
