Drawing is all the white thread does on this dupatta, because the only embroidery on it is tepchi, a line stitch, so nothing on the pink is filled, knotted or shaded. Suman Kumari hand embroidered its 2.5 metre length in Lucknow, mulmul of 70–75 GSM, 100% cotton. Gulabi Bhor is the pink light before sunrise, lying along the horizon as a line with nothing above it filled in yet.

The stitches

Tepchi (running)The swift running stitch laid along the printed motif, the ground on which every other stitch is built.

How to wear it

Over a pink kurta one shade deeper, the white tepchi line is what keeps the two tones apart.
With a black or charcoal kurta the white line is read first and the pink second.
Pleat it once over the shoulder rather than draping it wide, since 70–75 GSM mulmul adds no bulk where it folds.
