Bela Pastel Peach Mulmul Dupatta
Bela comes off indoors and goes back on at the door, and at 70–75 GSM its 2.5 metres costs nothing to carry. One 60 denier yarn runs both warp and weft, so neither direction of the mulmul feels coarser than the other. Aarti hand embroidered two stitches in Lucknow, white as the jasmine Bela is named for, phanda knotting seed by seed, bakhiya taken along the underside.

Aarti lives in a small village near Lucknow, in a kuchha house where every rupee matters, and she proudly adds her Chikankari income to the household alongside her husband’s.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- The order is the dupatta on its own, so the kurta and the bottom that go under it come from what you already own.
- Everyday or festive is decided by the kurta under it, not by the dupatta, which is the same peach and white on both days.
- Mulmul weighing 70–75 GSM has little grip on a bare shoulder, so pin this or carry it doubled over the arm rather than draped loose.
