Moti Off White and Beige Chanderi Saree
Shalendri had almost no contrast to judge by on this saree, the beige thread barely warmer than the off white Chanderi. Bakhiya on the back comes through the semi sheer weave a shade darker than the ground, and phanda knots the beige into the pearls Moti is named for, felt before seen. Hand embroidered in Lucknow, 5.5 metres, 95 ends to 62 picks an inch, blouse piece 80 cm.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- Pleats set in this Chanderi hold their line instead of softening through the day, the cloth running 115 to 120 grams to the square metre.
- Left to fall in folds rather than pinned flat, the pallu turns the light, which is where the beige work separates from the ground.
- A blouse here is a choice between the saree's own two colours, and beige rather than off white puts the thread colour at the shoulder.
