Portrait of Manisha, Chikankari artisan at Shwet Heritage, Lucknow
Manisha

Manisha is the eldest sibling in her family and took up Chikankari early so she could share responsibility for household expenses.

Shwet Heritage SHG network, Lucknow

The stitches

  • Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
  • Chana Patti (gram leaf)Gram-leaf trios scattered along creepers, small leaves in threes.
  • Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
  • Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
  • Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.

Allied Lucknow work

Worked alongside the Chikankari, not part of it.

  • Mukaish (metal sparkle)Flattened metal wire pierced through the cloth and twisted into points of sparkle, Lucknow’s badla work.

How to wear it

  • The dupatta is the magenta piece and the kurta and garara the white ones, so over the head or across a shoulder it decides how much colour the outfit shows.
  • Kurta and garara are both white, so a second colour arrives only through jewellery or a shoe, and the magenta thread is the one it has to sit beside.
  • Only the kurta needs sizing, since the garara sits on an elastic waist and the dupatta is a fixed 250 x 100 cm.

Each piece is embroidered and finished by hand, so a measurement may vary by up to 1 inch. That variation is the signature of handwork, not a defect. The first table measures the kurta and the second the garara, which sits on an elastic waist. The dupatta is 250 by 100 cm.
