Flame of the forest flowers on bare branches, yet Palash, the rust orange cambric kurta named for it, is worked in white rows of leaves. Four stitches, hand embroidered in Lucknow by the maker: ghas patti for the chevrons, upari bakhiya filling each leaf, pechni raising the lines between, phanda for the knots. The white pants run 36 inches to a rust hem band, the bust 37 to 45 inches.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
- Ghas Patti (grass leaf)Blades of grass worked in mirrored V-strokes, leaf-work that fans across hems and vines.
How to wear it
- A day of festive visits means no bag to set down at each door, since the kurta and the pants have 2 pockets each.
- White mules carry the white pants down to the floor, and silver at the ear sits apart from the rust orange.
- On a video call the worked yoke and both cuffs fill the frame, and the small butis on the body wait below it.
