A lunch table sees a woman from the waist up, which is where Saunf, named for the green fennel passed round after meals, puts its densest work. The maker hand embroidered the yoke and cuffs in Lucknow, beige on pesto green cambric: upari bakhiya closes each petal, ghas patti pairs the leaves and phanda ties each flower's centre. The yellow pants run 36 inches, the kurta's bust 37 to 45.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
- Ghas Patti (grass leaf)Blades of grass worked in mirrored V-strokes, leaf-work that fans across hems and vines.
How to wear it
- Whatever would crowd a lunch table goes in the pockets instead, two in the kurta and two in the pants.
- The V notch and potli buttons already dress the neck, which leaves large earrings as the one thing to add.
- The pants pull on at an elastic waist that needs no fitting, and a tonal vine is worked above each hem, below where the kurta ends.
