The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
- Ghas Patti (grass leaf)Blades of grass worked in mirrored V-strokes, leaf-work that fans across hems and vines.
How to wear it
- On a workday a phone sits better in the pant pocket, since the kurta's pocket bags show through the white cambric.
- The cambric picks up a faint blue from the pants below the waist, a sign of how light it is, so a camisole of your own goes underneath.
- White kolhapuris stay within the set's blue and white, and silver bangles are dressing enough for a morning puja or a family lunch.
