The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
- Ghas Patti (grass leaf)Blades of grass worked in mirrored V-strokes, leaf-work that fans across hems and vines.
How to wear it
- Two pockets in the kurta and two in the pant take a phone, keys and a metro card through an office day with no bag at all.
- Pin the hair up or pull it over one shoulder at a Diwali dinner, and the grey paisley at centre back can be seen.
- The black leaves sit above the pant hem, so kolhapuris or flats that leave the ankle bare keep them in sight.
