Andhera Ujala Black Georgette Saree
Meena had two marks to draw this black saree with, tepchi running the line and keel sharpening each flower centre to a point. Alongside that Chikankari sits mukaish badla, flattened metal wire pierced through the cloth and twisted, the light in Andhera Ujala against its dark ground. Hand embroidered in Lucknow on georgette that follows the body rather than standing away from it, 5.5 metres, no blouse piece.

Meena learned Chikankari as a child from women in her neighbourhood when her father’s low income forced her to stop studying.

The stitches
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Tepchi (running)The swift running stitch laid along the printed motif, the ground on which every other stitch is built.

How to wear it
- Neither a blouse nor cloth for one is in the order, so the tailor comes before the date, and the metal work argues for a plain cut at the shoulder.
- Badla is wire rather than thread, so put the saree on before your jewellery and keep it off rough knits in the wardrobe.
- Fluid cloth takes narrow pleats, so set them deep and pin them down, and the same saree covers an office day and a festive evening.
