Kajal Black and White Georgette Saree
Kajal is the kohl line, black against the white of the eye, and this saree draws it the other way, white on black. Shilpa hand embroidered this georgette in Lucknow, kangan closing a ring around each keel point, tepchi running the line those rings sit along. Two stitches are the whole of the embroidery across 5.5 metres, cloth that falls through the hand without holding a shape, no blouse piece.

The stitches
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Tepchi (running)The swift running stitch laid along the printed motif, the ground on which every other stitch is built.
How to wear it
- No blouse cloth arrives with the drape, so a tailor is part of what it costs, and black is a colour to match with the saree in hand, not from memory.
- Crochet at the border is a looped edge rather than a folded hem, so keep it clear of rings and bag clasps, which is where worked hems get pulled.
- Two stitches on a black ground read as plainly at a desk as they do after dark, so the saree belongs to an office morning and a festival evening alike.
