Feroza Turquoise Georgette Saree

Feroza takes its name from the turquoise stone, and both ground and thread are turquoise. Meera hand embroidered six stitches in Lucknow, and two open the cloth: jaali eases threads aside into a net, and hool, on no other saree we make, pierces an eyelet and binds it. Bakhiya worked underneath, phanda, pechni and chana patti leave the weave closed, 5.5 metres of crinkled georgette, no blouse piece.

The stitches

  • Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
  • Chana Patti (gram leaf)Gram-leaf trios scattered along creepers, small leaves in threes.
  • Hool (eyelet)A fine eyelet pierced open and bound in, the heart of a flower.
  • Jaali (lattice)Warp and weft parted with the needle into a net-like lattice. The cloth is never cut.
  • Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
  • Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.

How to wear it

  • The saree ships as the drape alone, with no blouse cloth, so allow time for one to be stitched before you plan to wear it.
  • A wedding evening or a festive lunch is where this one goes, with the blouse and the jewellery kept plain, since ground and thread hold one colour.
  • Hool and jaali leave open work in the weave, so keep rings, clasps and pins clear of them as you drape.
