Meena hand embroidered six Chikankari stitches into this yellow georgette in Lucknow, a count only Feroza matches in the catalogue. Thread and ground share one yellow here, the sun that Aftaab means, so relief does the reading: jaali parts warp and weft into an uncut net, bakhiya on the reverse, phanda, chana patti, pechni and keel kangan. Georgette falls rather than holds, 5.5 metres with an 80 cm blouse piece.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Chana Patti (gram leaf)Gram-leaf trios scattered along creepers, small leaves in threes.
- Jaali (lattice)Warp and weft parted with the needle into a net-like lattice. The cloth is never cut.
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- The saree ships with an 80 cm blouse piece, so take both to your tailor and settle the cut and the sleeve length there.
- Wear it to a haldi or a mehndi morning, where yellow is already the colour of the day, or to a wedding reception after dark.
- Tone on tone work is read by shadow, so the saree shows most of itself where the light arrives at an angle and least under a flat overhead.
