Kanak Yellow Viscose Saree
Chana patti sets three leaves to a stem, and the thread is the cloth's exact yellow, so height separates leaf from ground. Mamta hand embroidered yellow into yellow in Lucknow, bakhiya from behind the cloth, phanda knotting the buds, keel kangan a point inside a ring, pechni spiralled into a cord the thumb follows. Kanak means gold, and the matte viscose runs 5.5 metres, 80 cm blouse piece included.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Chana Patti (gram leaf)Gram-leaf trios scattered along creepers, small leaves in threes.
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- What comes with the drape is 80 cm of unstitched blouse cloth, not a finished blouse, so the stitching is still yours to arrange.
- The drape carries one colour only, so a yellow blouse leaves the relief as the whole pattern, and any other colour becomes the first thing seen on it.
- Viscose is fluid rather than crisp, so pleat it by hand at the waist and expect a soft fall. Weddings and festive evenings are what the saree is dressed for.
