Haldi Mustard Viscose Saree
Haldi is turmeric, and mustard is the colour it leaves on a hand that grinds it. Two stitches in white carry 5.5 metres of mustard viscose, and nothing outlines them: bakhiya set in from the opposite side of the cloth so it lies flat, phanda tied into knots that stand off the ground. Soni hand embroidered the two in Lucknow, with 80 cm of cloth for the blouse.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- Cloth for the blouse arrives with the saree, 80 cm of it, so a petticoat and an hour with the tailor are what is left to arrange.
- No trim and no metal are worked anywhere on this saree, so the handwork is what it brings to a wedding lunch or a festive evening.
