Zamurrad Green Viscose Saree
Jaali pushes the weave apart into a lattice, nothing cut. Pinki hand embroidered this saree in Lucknow, bakhiya on the underside, phanda knotted, pechni twisted into a standing cord, kangan ringing the keel point. Zamurrad means emerald, green thread on a green ground, so the drawing goes down into openings and up onto knots over 5.5 metres of fluid viscose, and a blouse piece of 80 cm is included.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Jaali (lattice)Warp and weft parted with the needle into a net-like lattice. The cloth is never cut.
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- The blouse piece included measures 80 cm, so give the tailor that number before choosing a sleeve, since the saree brings no more cloth than that.
- Five stitches worked green on green leave no colour contrast anywhere in the piece, so the saree suits a wedding or a festival dinner more than a working day.
- Jaali draws with openings while phanda and pechni stand above the cloth, so lamplight from the side or behind shows more of the work than daylight straight on.
