Phoolmati, a large motif specialist with more than 12 years at the frame, hand embroidered five stitches across it in Lucknow, jaali lattice among bakhiya, keel, phanda and pechni. Phoolmati is a large-motif specialist in the Shwet Heritage self-help-group network in Lucknow, with more than 12 years at the embroidery frame. Large motifs demand sustained tension control across broad fields of cloth — hours of even-handed work per panel — and her profile appears here exactly as she is credited in our workshop records.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
- Jaali (lattice)Warp and weft parted with the needle into a net-like lattice. The cloth is never cut.
- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
How to wear it
- A polki or kundan choker and a neat bun crown it.
- Ivory or antique gold at the hands balances the magenta.

Semi-stitched means the garment arrives partly constructed so your tailor can finish it to your exact measurements. The blouse and kurta panels are cut and embroidered. The final fitting seams are left open on purpose. Plan for a local tailoring visit before wearing.
