Alta Red Mulmul Angarkha Top
At 70–75 GSM, mulmul has no stiffness, so the angarkha's crossed front lies along the body and ties keep the V shut. Ram Devi hand embroidered white thread onto the red ground in Lucknow: ghas patti fanning mirrored strokes into leaves, keel pinning a centre for kangan to circle, phanda tied tight into buds. The name comes from alta, the red drawn along the edge of the feet.

The stitches
- Ghas Patti (grass leaf)Blades of grass worked in mirrored V-strokes, leaf-work that fans across hems and vines.
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- The crossed panel and its ties sit across the front, so a bag on a cross body strap lands straight on them. Carry it in the hand instead.
- Red ground and white thread are all this top carries, no metal worked into it, so anything that catches light comes from the jewellery.
- White or ivory below keeps the red as the one colour in the outfit, and the bottom is what moves the top from a morning to a festival.
