Kesar Kyari Yellow Mulmul Angarkha Top
White thread makes every mark on this yellow angarkha, and yellow is all that changes between it and the same top in black or green. Tepchi is laid before anything else, keel gives each flower its point, phanda stands the buds up in knots, hand embroidered by Manju in Lucknow. The mulmul is 70–75 GSM, 100% cotton, and Kesar Kyari is saffron and the bed it grows in.

Manju is an elderly Chikankari artisan who has spent most of her life stitching between household responsibilities, treating the craft as both work and quiet companionship.

The stitches
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
- Tepchi (running)The swift running stitch laid along the printed motif, the ground on which every other stitch is built.
How to wear it
- A tie closes the front, not a button, so the neckline sits where you set it rather than where a buttonhole would have put it.
- A dark indigo or black bottom holds the yellow to the top half, where an off white one lets the colour carry the whole outfit.
- The crossed front will not take a belt over it, so let the hip length hem fall straight and leave the shaping to the tie at the neck.
