Manisha hand embroidered this lemon yellow shirt in Lucknow, filling the front panels and leaving the back plain. Tepchi keeps to the print in white thread, and keel kangan finishes the flowers with a point at the centre and a ring around that point, both worked on the face of the mulmul, 70–75 GSM, 60 denier warp and weft, 100% cotton. Shikanji is the lemon drink.

The stitches

  • Tepchi (running)The swift running stitch laid along the printed motif, the ground on which every other stitch is built.
  • Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.

How to wear it

  • A bangle or a watch sits on bare arm rather than under a cuff, because three quarter sleeves stop above the wrist.
  • Hip length falls just past a trouser waistband, so the shirt reads finished worn over one and needs no tuck to hold its line.
  • Silver reads clearly as metal against lemon yellow, where gold sits close enough to the colour to blur into it.
