Sherbet is poured over ice through the hot months, and mulmul is the cloth those months ask for, 100% cotton at 70–75 GSM. Meena, in Lucknow, hand embroidered this shirt in white thread, tepchi following the printed motif, and at the flower centres keel sets a point that kangan then rings. White does the drawing up both front panels, peach stays inside it, and the back carries no work.

Meena

Meena learned Chikankari as a child from women in her neighbourhood when her father’s low income forced her to stop studying.

The stitches

  • Tepchi (running)The swift running stitch laid along the printed motif, the ground on which every other stitch is built.
  • Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.

How to wear it

  • The shirt brings two pale colours and no third, so a charcoal or dark denim bottom is what gives the outfit somewhere to end.
  • A mandarin band buttons the neck shut. A scarf has nowhere to sit under it, and the collar closes the outfit on its own.
  • Three quarter sleeves end clear of the wrist, out of the way of ink, keyboards and a washbasin through an office day.
