Neelam spent her thread at the V, phanda knots packed into paisleys on this pastel pink mulmul short top, then spaced the rest as single sprays. Keel kangan flowers and ghas patti leaves carry white thread to the hem and to one buti at centre back, hand embroidered in Lucknow. Mishri is rock sugar, and those knots are its crystals, raised under a fingertip on 100% cotton, 70–75 GSM.

The stitches

  • Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
  • Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
  • Ghas Patti (grass leaf)Blades of grass worked in mirrored V-strokes, leaf-work that fans across hems and vines.

How to wear it

  • The off white pants in the photographs do not come with the top. Any plain straight pant from your own shelf does their work at a desk.
  • Phanda already follows the V, so jhumkas and a bare neck do for a long lunch, with no chain lying across the knots.
  • Mulmul at 70–75 GSM shows what sits under it. An inner of your own near your skin tone keeps the eye on the buti at the back.
