Portrait of Shilpa, Chikankari artisan at Shwet Heritage, Lucknow
Shilpa

Shilpa is a young artisan from Lucknow who learned Chikankari during her school holidays.

Shwet Heritage SHG network, Lucknow

The stitches

  • Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.

How to wear it

  • Sleeveless makes this a summer top and a summer office is a cold room, so the layer it needs is one kept at the desk rather than carried outside.
  • Bakhiya is worked into the cloth rather than onto it, so a bag strap or a seat belt crosses this top with nothing raised to catch.
